introdution
Palazzo Bifora is a restoration and adaptive reuse project within Mdina’s historic fortified city. The intervention transformed a traditional Maltese palazzo into a contemporary hospitality space while preserving its architectural identity, cultural value, and historic character.
design philosophy
Set within one of Malta’s most sensitive urban contexts, the project required a careful balance between conservation and contemporary use. The approach was guided by restraint, clarity and respect for the building’s original fabric. Rather than overpowering the existing structure, the intervention sought to revive it through precise restoration and discreet modern upgrades, ensuring its continued relevance while maintaining its connection to place.
design philosophy
The design process began with a close reading of the palazzo’s architectural language, from its façade composition and materiality to its spatial proportions and internal rhythm. Key heritage elements were retained, repaired, and restored, allowing the original craftsmanship to remain the primary architectural expression. Every intervention was considered in relation to the existing fabric, ensuring that the building’s historic richness remained visible and respected.
Contemporary insertions were introduced as a secondary layer, supporting modern comfort, accessibility, and operational needs without compromising the palazzo’s character. Internally, spaces were reconfigured to improve circulation, natural light, and spatial experience while preserving the building’s intimacy and layered quality. The result is a sensitive regeneration that allows Palazzo Bifora to evolve through renewed use, while remaining deeply rooted in its historic context.
