introdution
This project explores the architectural vocabulary of the iconic Balluta buildings, drawing inspiration from their traditional use of masonry and enclosed wooden balconies. The intervention sought to ensure that new developments adjacent to this 1920s landmark respected its unique character while contributing to the broader urban context.
design philosophy Plots located closest to the Balluta buildings were designed using traditional Maltese stone and timber balconies, creating a visual continuity that avoids any harsh contrast with the historic gem. This sensitive approach preserves the architectural rhythm and cultural identity of the area.
design philosophy
The project was commissioned with a value of €8,000,000, reflecting both the scale of the works and the importance of balancing conservation with innovation in one of Malta’s most architecturally significant urban settings.
For plots situated further away, a more contemporary approach was adopted. Verticality was retained to maintain harmony with the surrounding skyline, while modern features and materials were introduced. This strategy ensured a seamless marriage between heritage values and contemporary development.
